Chinese Kung Fu In Temples & Village Ancestral Halls
Temples and village ancestral halls used to play an important role in the propagation of Chinese Martial Arts in the olden days, in China the most well-known are of course Shaolin and Wutang Temple. Till today in rural region of Southern China like Guandong and Fujian you can still see youths practicing Southern Style Chinese Kung Fu in their village ancestral halls. In Singapore, the Siong Lim Temple at Toa Payoh in support of anti-Japanese war efforts during world war two was used for the training of volunteers. Former Abbot of Siong Lim Temple, Sek Koh Sam, a Shaolin Kung Fu expert, imparted his martial arts skills the residents of Toa Payoh and other martial art students, to equip them with adequate self-defence against gangsters. Many of the martial arts schools in Singapore and all over the world today can trace their lineage to him and his disciples.
